  • electrical power

Transportation Highlights include:

  • Approximately 30 miles from U.S. Interstate 16, connecting Macon and Savannah.
  • Easy access to the Savannah River Parkway, which provides easy, four-lane accessibility to the Georgia Ports Authority in Savannah.
  • S.R. 21 and U.S. 25 are now four lane highways as part of the Savannah River Parkway
  • The Savannah River Parkway connects Augusta to Savannah and routes through Jenkins County along Highway 25.

Savannah River Parkway

The county has access to I-20, I-16 and I-95 via U.S. 25. The Savannah River Parkway, a four-lane divided highway connecting Augusta to Savannah, will route through Jenkins County along U.S. Highway 25.  Currently, the stretch of U.S. 25 linking Jenkins to Augusta  is within 8 miles of being completed as a 4-lane highway and the stretch of the Parkway from from Jenkins to Savannah is already complete and open to traffic.  This highway is known as the Savannah River Parkway.  Millen, Georgia is the HUB of this Parkway and the 4-lane highway that continues from Millen on to Statesboro and to I-16.

Once completed, this highway will serve as a major thoroughfare for drivers commuting from Augusta to Savannah.  The highway will connect U.S. Interstate 95 near Savannah with U.S. Interstate 20 in Augusta.   The Savannah River Parkway will also provide easy, four-lane accessibility to the Georgia Ports Authority Port in Savannah.

Utilizing existing routes, the proposed site is approximately 30 miles from U.S. Interstate 16, an east-west Interstate connecting Savannah to Macon.  Daily traffic flow along any of the major routes leading to Interstate 16 is very low.

From the proposed site, U.S. Interstate 520 (Bobby Jones Expressway in Augusta) is approximately 50 miles.  Construction along U.S. Highway 25 (the Savannah River Parkway) may cause slight traffic delays.  However, Georgia Highway 56 from Waynesboro to Augusta provides an alternative route to I—520.  Traffic flow along State Highway 56 is low.  U.S. Interstate I-20 is approximately 10 miles from the access points used by U.S. Highway 25 and State Highway 56.

Fall-Line Freeway

The Fall-Line Freeway, like the Savannah River Parkway, will provide four-lane divided highway access from Augusta to Macon to Columbus upon its completion.  The route along U.S. Highway 1, connecting Augusta to Wrens, is complete.  The route along Georgia Highway 88, connecting Wrens to Sandersville, is also complete and open.  The remaining portions of the Fall-Line Freeway between Sandersville and Macon are under various stages of construction and should be complete within the next two to three years.  Once complete, the Freeway will connect U.S. Interstate 20 in Augusta to U.S. Interstate 75 in Macon and U.S. Interstate 185 in Columbus.  Portions of the Fall-Line Freeway may be accessed along several different routes from Millen.

Air Transportation Facilities

The Millen-Jenkins County airport, located on 70 acres just five miles from Millen, is jointly owned and operated by the city and county. The airport accommodates general aviation related activities, including recreational flying and agricultural spraying.

The airport has one runway, runway 17/35, that is 4000 feet-long and 60-feet wide, and equipped with medium-intensity runway lighting (MIRL), precision path approach path indicators (PAPI), rotating beacon, wind cone, and segment circle. Current landslide facilities include a 300 square-foot administration building/terminal and 9 apron parking spaces.

Bush Field Regional Airport in nearby Augusta and Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport in Savannah, offer daily direct flights to Atlanta, Columbia, Charlotte, Houston, Dallas, Detroit, Cincinnati, New York, Newark, and Washington. Jenkins County also has convenient access to the international Port of Savannah, serviced by over 100 daily motor carriers and the capacity to handle thousands of containers.   Both airports are within easy driving distance from the proposed site location.  These airports are serviced by a host of major carriers in the airline industry.

paramore 2Rail Facilities

Norfolk Southern, a Class I railroad, operates major freight corridors in and through Georgia. A major corridor is the north-south link along the eastern border of the state from Augusta through Savannah to Jacksonville, Florida (I-26/I-95). A little over 25 miles of the Central of Georgia rail line runs through Jenkins County.   As noted previously, this site is bordered by a Norfolk Southern rail line.
